Sakes Alive!!

(Chris Vandeviver)

What are your top five albums that were released in 2009? (In order 1-5)

  1. Dangers - Messy, Isn't It?

  2. Worn In Red - In the Offing

  3. Dasha - Damned If We Do

  4. American Steel - Dear Friends and Gentle Hearts

  5. Polar Bear Club - Chasing Hamburg

What band did you discover in 2009 (can be a brand new band or an older band) that had an impact on your life? What made them significant?

I discovered Dangers this year, having sampled bits and pieces of their older recordings and thought, "This is cool". Then they recently put their new full-length "Messy, Isn't It?" on their website, and I was completely blown away. I've only "stolen" two records ever online. The first was Dillinger Four "Civil War," which I regretted. This time I simply had to (and have every intention of buying this record). So many bands out there are pale-faced carbon copies of certain aspects of their influences but never eclipse those influences because they latch onto all the wrong things (i.e. style over substance). Then a band like Dangers lurks down in the sewers, not attempting to impress anybody, and the sincerity and ferocity that emanates is absolutely life altering. The lyrics are the epitome of "thought-provoking"; animosity that a slam-dance can do no justice to.

How will you remember 2009? (In terms of music)

Unfortunately, I bought little to no records this year. Trying to tour in a DIY band means you tend to be broke as hell. And since I don't download records, my music consumption is severely limited. However, I will remember 2009 as the year that I realized that the bigger record labels don't seem to have any sense of good music. There's an entire class of smaller bands that the majority will not hear because they don't have the money or backing to promote them. But they are above and beyond the schlock that will make most "Top Ten" lists (mine included): Aficionado, Comadre, Constrictor, His Day Has Come, Like Wolves, One Win Choice, OK Pilot, Such Gold, Swingset - and the list goes on and

on.

2009 was a huge year for reunions. What reunion excited you the most? What band that has not reunited would you love to see play/record most in 2010?

Honestly, I'm a big recording fan over live-show fan. My records will sustain me for quite some time. I did see Small Brown Bike this year, and it was pretty cool. If any band had to reunite, seeing Refused would be sweet.

What can we look forward to from you in 2010?

Do bands ever say anything unique when faced with this type of question? New recordings, a full-length, and the zombie apocalypse.

What three records are you looking forward to most in 2010?

Dangers! The physical release of the record, that is. Anything on Jade Tree (heard they've got some stuff lined up). Fucked Up.
