Though the thought of pairing a shoegazey indie pop band with an anything-goes punk group on a split record may seem odd, in the case of this effort from South Korea's Say Sue Me and Japan's Otoboke Beaver, the results are magical. Say Sue Me's contribution is the sunny “Good For Some Reason,” which finds gorgeously hazy vocals soaring over jangly guitars and a driving rhythm. A solo break late in the going really clicks, and the entire track has a warm, optimistic feel. Otoboke Beaver's B-side is much more straight-forward than anything on their Love is Short EP and arguably the most accessible track they've put out stateside. “S'il Vous Plait” is propelled by a crisp, punchy rhythm, working towards a nifty breakdown in which the prominent female vocal is changed up to a more inquisitive one heard over murky, quietly tense bass. Per usual, there's playful banter between the bandmates, and shrill shrieking to cap things off. Regrettably brief at just over five minutes in length, I'd still call this a strong release that nicely showcases the groups involved.

The 80's weren't really as bad as those VH1 specials make it out to be. Sure the fashion of those years was pretty atrocious, but try going to a concert today without laughing. It's hard, trust me. Throughout the decade there was quality music being made on all fronts - pop, hardcore, new-wave, hip hop, and punk. There were some … Read more

I turned 31 about a month ago and at my age a person tends to finally want to "grow up" and get out of hardcore. There's been plenty of lonely Friday and Saturday nights (like tonight) where I've wanted just pack up 90% of my CD collection (the fuck if I'm going to give up my Cro-Mags and Lifetime discs) … Read more

Tempers of music fans ran high from the day stories were posted on various sites that specific bands were to be covering songs that are heralded as classics in the genres of punk rock and hardcore. A metalcore band covering Bad Brains? A pop-punk band covering the legendary Gorilla Biscuits? Surely this is some sort of joke. Surely not. Say … Read more
