This is a record resembling Clash Of The Titans. Both Canada's Ensorcelor and England's Moloch have been lurching in the darkest reaches of the metal underground for a few years. While some bands err to the side or fluid hooks in their riffs and others slink towards creating the most noise possible, somewhere in between lie these two.

On one side we have Ensorcelor hailing from Montreal. The band, in their limited discography, have managed to take the bleariest rot spewing parts of Eyehategod and slow them down to a completely glacial pace. This makes other doom sound entirely too fast. Managing to show restraint while capitalizing on deathly howls in place of anything remotely resembling melodic vocals seems a task unto itself. Ensorcelor capitalize on this aspect of their sound by allowing the vocals to lurch in and out of the song as needed.

The opposite side contains 2 songs from Moloch. The band from Leicester remain on a tear. Managing to release records regularly is a task unto itself to make strides to excel within your sound may be near impossible to most. Moloch share the basics of the doom style with Ensorcelor but change things up by making their songs slightly less noisey overall and allowing the bass to rumble through. This gives everything a slightly darker vibe while retaining some of the discordance that their style possesses.

Overall this is a good stage for 2 relatively young bands that insist upon doing their own thing within their chosen genre. While ardent doom fans may not stack this in between their St. Vitus and Trouble records I could see fans of more modern doom and blackened metal styles finding much to enjoy on this.

Indianola (2005)

The 80's weren't really as bad as those VH1 specials make it out to be. Sure the fashion of those years was pretty atrocious, but try going to a concert today without laughing. It's hard, trust me. Throughout the decade there was quality music being made on all fronts - pop, hardcore, new-wave, hip hop, and punk. There were some … Read more

Revelation (2005)

I turned 31 about a month ago and at my age a person tends to finally want to "grow up" and get out of hardcore. There's been plenty of lonely Friday and Saturday nights (like tonight) where I've wanted just pack up 90% of my CD collection (the fuck if I'm going to give up my Cro-Mags and Lifetime discs) … Read more

Tempers of music fans ran high from the day stories were posted on various sites that specific bands were to be covering songs that are heralded as classics in the genres of punk rock and hardcore. A metalcore band covering Bad Brains? A pop-punk band covering the legendary Gorilla Biscuits? Surely this is some sort of joke. Surely not. Say … Read more
