I have a huge crush on Kim Deal. There, I said it. Fuck you, don't judge me. You probably rubbed one out to Vanessa Hudgens last night, you sick fuck. Kim's more woman than you could ever hope to get, pervy.
That's right, the real Deal sisters are back and they're ready to lo-fi rock your socks off with their best album since, well the last Breeders album, 2002's Title TK. Kicking off their return is "Overglazed," a most triumphant sounding song that might even be unrecognizable if it weren't for Deal's voice soaring above from the very first notes. This leads into "Bang On" a more familiar sounding tune with the plaintive cry of "No one loves me." Oh, Ms. Deal, how wrong you are.
Six years is a long time in between albums. All that we had to hold us over was a cover (an absolutely sublime cover, mind you) of Hedwig's "Wicked Little Town." I heard she spent a lot of that time touring with The Pixies. A legendary band and all, but they never let Kim sing enough, goddammit.
Mountain Battles has thirteen, count 'em thirteen new tracks but the album only clocks in at around thirty-five minutes. That means (according to my calculations) I can almost play the album twice in an hour. Damn. As cool as this album is, as much as it makes my year to have brand new Breeders tunes to listen to I want more yes, I'm just that greedy. I think I'm actually one of the few people hoping that there will be no more Pixies reunions, as that just means longer until the next Breeders album. Think I'm crazy? Listen to those dreamy harmonies on "Istanbul" and tell me you want Black Francis pooching up the proceedings. Yeah, I didn't think so.
