Six Feet Under are certainly not new to this. The band formed by some of death metal's biggest names (at least in the ‘90s), seems to persist. Formed as a vehicle for Chris Barnes after leaving Cannibal Corpse, and also included members of Obituary and made their mark with what could be a considered a classic debut. Since then, the band have released a number of full-lengths and three cover albums.
The band delves directly into their usual bag of tricks from the start. The simple groove-laden death metal riffs that the band have relied on before continue. Throughout this record it seems the band exists solely to have something for Barnes to do his cookie monster over. While Barnes is certainly one of metal's most recognizable vocalists, his "hero" status does little to make the rest of the band stand out. The band rely on speedy drumming and groovy riffs with solos laid overtop almost as an afterthought.
Why don't I mention particular songs? Because I couldn't tell the difference between one and the next. Sometimes they're slightly faster, others are heavier on the groove, but never vastly different. The biggest problem, though? There's is nothing in the songwriting to make the songs catchy. Not a damn hook to be found here. Sure it is plenty brutal throughout and Barnes' vocals are as nasty as they've ever been. Sadly there's very little here for the casual metal fan. Hell it would be hard to know if this record appeals to the band's core audience even.
To put it more succinctly this record is hella boring. If you need something to upset your middle class parents you could probably do better than this. Even as a fan of old school death metal I couldn't find a reason to listen to this outside of reviewing it. Nothing new, nothing special, nothing to remember.
