Pulling teeth have always taken the term metalcore to an almost literal degree. Much like Integrity has done in the sense that for every breakdown there is a strong guitar solo or heavy thrash riff. The band found more than a couple detractors with their last release Paranoid Delusions | Paradise Illusions . While im not certain if that was to be considered an album or EP what it did was make everyone completely aware that Pulling Teeth was not just short fast loud. The band did much to broaden their sound by making longer structures and more interesting instrumental passages. While that record had stumbling points throughout these were mere bits of growing pains. These little slips help to make certain that this new release is stronger than ever.
The band truly went all out with this one. Mike Riley's vocal turns are as nasty and acidic as ever. This creates a strong palate for his ever present worldview. The guitars, having always been a focal point of PT's sound, are more intuitive within the songs surroundings. When they need to be busy they remain active when necessary they slow to a crawl or act as a melodic counterpoint.
That is the main difference in this record as opposed to their past efforts, there is no lack of dynamics within this record. While the first half blazes rife with strong leads and face melting solos there are just as many melodic and atmospheric guitar pieces come the second half of the record. This allows for all of the musicians to spread their wings within the Pulling Teeth sound.
Where this record gets interesting is in the guest list. While they have had a guest here or there in the past this record has a numerous amount of guests contributing throughout. Members of Trapped Under Ice and Pale Creation will probably stand as the most obvious within the songs. The strength here is none of these guest turns seem out of place they all feel comfortable within the the context of the song.
This album will prove to most that Pulling Teeth are not only carrying the torch for real metalcore, but also providing a foundation from which it can grow by their example. This is certainly not a record to be ignored by any fan of hardcore, metal or anything that is heavy. Pulling Teeth have managed to create a beast of an album that demands attention be paid to it.
