When was the last time you were angry? You're on a computer at the moment, so maybe you have a sticky key that really pisses you off. Or maybe your computer speaks to you in a really sarcastic tone, and you...just...can't....take...it...anymore. At any rate, anybody can relate to anger. Hey...you also like music, I bet. Crucial music you say? Well luckily for you, you are reading a review of Lights Out, California's most crucial band.
"I guess there's no reason to tell you to go/Because you were never fucking here"
You've continued reading because you either already have heard this album or you haven't. If you already have, respek. If you haven't, you're probably wondering what this sounds like. Get Out fits in that ambiguous genre that is punk/hardcore. There are parts that are fast, no blast beats though, and parts that slow down into a youth crew groove. Unlike Youth Of Today and Gorilla Biscuits though, the vocals are a lot more pissed off. What's nice is that no matter how angry Connor gets, you can still understand what he's saying. It almost reminds me of a more punk version of Dave Weinberg, in terms of the sound. Lyrically, Connor doesn't touch on political subjects, but instead pens seven songs about people that piss him off. Each songs appears to be about a different person, specific in that way, but each is vague enough so that anybody could relate to his anger at fakes, posers, etc. There's even a cameo appearance from Ryan DM on "Another Look" to spice things up. My favorite song, "In Denial," sums everything up that is so great about this album, with the bouncy parts, fast parts and a sweet breakdown at the end that starts with the bass only and dives into your crotch with fury.
"You can't suck this dry/You can try to ruin the scene,/But you'll never ruin me"
Besides the solo in "Another Look" (which is awesome), Lights Out doesn't do anything technically too spectacular. If you aren't looking for the next Rush of hardcore, but instead are looking for nine minutes of solid hardcore/punk/rock songs, Get Out is worth your money and time. Like any hardcore band should be, Lights Out is great live and has tons of energy, so if they're in your area, get off the internet and into the pit.
"How does it feel to be another number?/GET OUT!"
HOT TIP- The CD version of this also has the demo which kicks ass.
