Dead to Me is one of those bands that has been generating a lot of buzz since their debut Cuban Ballerina . I never understood all the fuss. I thought they were okay, but nothing on that album really stood out to me. And I didn't listen to it enough to have it really grow on me, as some people said was necessary. I didn't really think it was that great, nor did I hate it. It was something I don't mind in someone else's car, but nothing I was enthusiastic enough to run out and grab for myself.
Little Brother is a step up from Cuban Ballerina . While still not an EP that really jumps out and grabs me on the first few listens, what does stand out is some very proficient songwriting. This is a band that knows how to craft a song. Hooks, melody, memorable chorus, they nail each one almost to the point of being overly formulaic. But it works. What could also be a blessing or a curse depending on who you ask, Dead to Me definitely wear their Clash influence on their sleeves unabashedly. This stands out the most in the title track. The chorus sounds like something straight off of London Calling. My main complaint with this EP though, is the production. It's drained of all low end. I'm sure this has to do with the style they are playing, rather than bad production. Artistically I'm assuming they felt it completed their vision. It just makes it harder for me to listen, and want to listen to repeatedly. There is some interesting bass work going on here, and I hate to here it drowned and blended with the guitars.
Overall, a more than listenable EP, and a definite step in the right direction for Dead to Me. I will be looking forward to hearing what they put out next. So should you.
