Dave Hause recently embarked on a little project that involves five indie labels. He took two artists from each label and covered a song from each. The first in the series comes from Chunksaah (though it wasn't the first to be released.) The first half of the 7-inch features alternate versions of Hause's, "Time Will Tell" and "Meet Me at The Lanes." Both have Dave alone with his guitar, which is definitely my favorite way to enjoy Hause's music as it presents a much more personal and engaging tone.
The first of the b-sides is a cover of The Bouncing Souls title track, "Ghosts on the Boardwalk." As far as Bouncing Souls songs go, it suits him well. However, in a way, that's almost disappointing. It's not a song he could really make his own. It would have been more interesting for him to do a song like "Gasoline" or "Never Say Die/When You're Young." His Detournement cover of "Odessa," on the other hand, is a song he made his own. It's the highlight of the EP. I look forward to checking out the other installments and seeing how well he tackled Jets to Brazil and Strike Anywhere.
