Black Moth Super Rainbow are a great group of musicians led by one person mysteriously known as Tobacco that pump out some of the most psychedelically delicious sounding records that I have ever heard in my life, and they are the type of musicians that do whatever the hell they want while still making ass shakingly fun records. With the release of the Kickstarter financed and self released Cobra Juicy, the beautifully crazy cats in Black Moth Super Rainbow turn their music upside down to create some insane hyper sexed psychedelic disco sound that is jaw droppingly gorgeous sounding complete with an inexplicably exquisite pop sheen.

Take the lead off track for example; “Windshield Smasher” is a dance beat bulwarked blast of infectious synth grooves that might remind you of the same strange circus scene that I am imagining in my head as the bounce and ebullient mood of the music is intensely fun, and as you settle in for the album, you might also be wishing that it was summer outside because the songs scream to be played loud with the windows down so you can stick your head out the window and feel the wind blast you in the face as you try to drive with your feet (or is that just more of the weirdo day dream talking). The similarly dance able “Gangs In The Garden” is a persistent booty shaking affair that if you don’t find yourself at the very least tapping your feet or doing the pout while bouncing your head, then you have no soul at all; and maybe you should find a way to pull that stick out of your ass. All this dance talk aside, I do not want to give you the impression that the fine folks of Black Moth Super Rainbow have created some weird post gabber record because tracks like “The Healing Power” and “Psychic Love Damage” demonstrate their ability to blast out the reverb drenched pop masterpieces that fans have come to expect from this outfit.

Cobra Juicy is a haze-y acid drenched dream inducing album that is just dizzying in its breadth and ability to generate ear candy for listeners to get fattened up by or juiced and hypered up for whatever shenanigans that might blink on as ideas in their minds, and no matter what types of songs you might be drawn to on Cobra Juicy, the fact is that Black Moth Super Rainbow have cranked out a fun as hell record.

Dandelion Gum
Graveface (2007)

Making themselves known to a national audience by opening for The Flaming Lips and already slated as an opener for Aesop Rock this winter, Black Moth Super Rainbow latest release, Dandelion Gum, was lent to me by a friend. The psychedelic/drone-pop is repetitive and spaced out in all the right ways, but the jams never get in the way of … Read more

Wow, just seriously wow, even though Black Moth Super Rainbow has been on my list to check out for a while now, I am glad that their latest album, Eating Us is my first exposure to the group because it is a breath of fresh air at just the right time. When trying to describe the band to people (as … Read more
