It’s been hard to believe that A Wilhelm Scream’s last full length, Career Suicide, was released in 2007. I’ve seen these guys live a handful of times since then, and they are anything but old news. No Idea definitely knew what they were doing by adding this headlining band to their roster. The amount of energy and spirit A Wilhelm Scream posses helped ease the waiting period for a new LP, but that being said, no one is complaining that they finally released Partycrasher.
Partycrasher had some massive speakers to fill fuming off the high standards of Career Suicide, and right from the start the record feels like it’s out to prove something. “Boat Builders” starts the record off stronger than ever with Nuno Pereira’s vocals cleaner and clearer than we've previously heard. “The Last Laugh” is another built-up track that AWS is known for, and once you hit Nuno singing “I’ll wait to the end of the world to get the last laugh on you,” the song has completely consumed you. Partycrasher starts off stronger than any other AWS record, and yes, I’m saying it’s right up there with Ruiner’s opener “The King Is Dead.”
“Number One” sounds like a classic track that could easily fit into the band's collection of songs. “Gut Sick Companion” has the perfect combination of heavy and mellow parts that even out into a melodic harmony the band is known for. About half way through is where the record loses a bit of momentum; the songs don’t flow together as well, but they aren’t off the mark by much. That being said, “Walkin’ with Michael Douglas” has softer, clean vocals that really show the growth in Pereira’s voice. And it wouldn’t be AWS record without some sweet sounding vocals mixed with sexy, yet aggressively intricate, guitar riffs ending the album on “Born a Wise Man.”
Partycrasher starts off so strong I’m just not sure that momentum lasts throughout, but any fan of AWS shouldn’t be disappointed. Partycrasher is the perfect mixture of angry and catchy music—a classic AWS record. Plus, it’s not so much songs about pure revenge, but more so “You fucked with me and now you’re going to get what’s coming to you.” No Idea made the right move releasing this record, and I can only hope a band as impressive as A Wilhelm Scream gets what’s coming to them.
