Formed in 2018 and made up of drummer Jessamyn Violet and guitarist Vince Cuneo, Venice Beach, California’s Movie Club have over the years pumped out a string of releases named after various animals. The instrumental duo’s upcoming fifth studio release, Fangtooth (featuring what seems to be a River Monster on its cover), continues that tradition, combining psychedelic and garage rock sort of sounds with a tinge of surf here and there.
While I kind of dug the horror movie vibe featured on the EP’s opening track “Badlands,” Movie Club prove equally adept at producing more moody tunes as well. “Ghost In the Machine,” for instance, plays like the sort of smoky and bluesy piece you might find lurking in a David Lynch project.
Premiering here, we’ve got the music video for album track “Trap Door.” Created as a sort of homage to the Oscar-winning Red Balloon short film about friendship that I remember watching as a kid, the entire music video was filmed in reverse and is complimented by excellent drone footage and location work around the Salton Sea (it’s kind of fun to play “Spot the GTAV locations” while viewing). Overall, it’s a pretty cool visual companion to the track.
Dig the video below, head over here to check out the group’s Bandcamp page, and watch out for Fangtooth, which drops on August 10th.
