Over the past decade, Fun Fun Fun Festival has provided the city of Austin, Texas with a definite alternative to the pop culture meltdown that is the hyper-commercialized and overblown Austin City Limits Music Festival. Specializing in the type of hip-hop, electronic, indie, punk, and metal that would feel - and has felt - increasingly out of place at ACL, Fun Fun Fun has hosted a mind-boggling lineup of acts over the years, making it most unfortunate that Transmission Events, the company that put on the festival, splintered earlier this summer.
Today, the first lineup announcement was revealed for Sound on Sound Festival, an event being hyped as a potential replacement for Fun Fun Fun, albeit one held out of town at the Sherwood Forest Faire in McDade on November 4th, 5th, and 6th. With headliners that include Beach House, Death Grips, Explosions in the Sky, Phantogram, and The Descendents, it would appear that Sound on Sound is playing into the niche left by the potential (?) disolution of Fun Fun Fun. What the future holds at this point is anyone's guess: the Fun Fun Fun Fest website and Facebook are still active.
Could Austin possibly host two genre-based festivals in the autumn? This could get interesting.
