Mark your diaries, book your flights and apply for leave. Australia’s most irreverent and eclectic music and art festival, Mona Foma (Mofo), just announced its dates for January 2018. And in a major surprise it included confirmation of a Mini Mofo in Launceston, an increase in the size of the Hobart event.
“This could be our last festival at Mona for a while,” says curator Brian Ritchie, “so we really want to go out with a bang.”
SPB hit the event earlier this year. Read our coverage here.
Apparently funding discussions are well advanced to relocate Mofo to Launceston from 2019, so this time around Launceston locals will get a taste of Mofos to come. “We’re hoping to put on a bunch of exclusive shows in Launceston: how big we will go, you’ll have to wait and see,” says Ritchie.
The Launceston Mini Mofo will run from 12-14 January, including a free festival street party for locals on the Sunday. Mofo then takes over Hobart from 15-22 January, with a host of high profile stand-alone gigs, pop-up events and art inspired club nights around the city, culminating in Mofo at Mona from 19- 21 January.
Ritchie hinted the program will embrace an even more radical cross section of artists, genres and agendas.
Mona Foma takes place in Hobart and Launceston from 12-22 January 2018.
Full line up announced on Friday 13 October 2017.
Tickets go on sale Monday October 16.
