Curated again by Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes, the Museum of Old and New Art will host the ninth installation of Mofo, an avant-garde festival of music and art, from January 18 to 22 in Hobart, and 20 to 22 at MONA itself.
More than 200 artists, both local and international, will feature over the five days.
Highlights include an exclusive Australian show of Puscifer, the Australian premiere of Peaches Christ Superstar, mash-up pioneer DJ Z-Trip and the world exclusive premiere of t?t?ma, the latest project from Faith No More frontman Mike Patton and experimental composer Anthony Pateras.
MOFO 2017 will continue the series of unlikely collaborations: Regurgitator will reinterpret a classic Velvet Underground album alongside a guest synth player and Chinese-zither and a German theremin virtuoso will team up with Jim Moginie from Midnight Oil and a guest pianist.
MONA will host the new "The origin of art" exhibition and for the festival its catacombs will host Australian artist Guy Ben-Ary who created a “wet analogue” synthesiser called cellF, made from his own body cells in MONA’s Organ Room. American artist Ruth West invites you to put on 3D virtual-reality goggles and trigger deep-ocean survey sounds. And M.E.S.S. (Melbourne Electronic Sound Studio) will bring over a collection of vintage synths.
Faux Mo, Mofo’s fantastic late-night art party, will also return.
