Fotocrime, the darkwave project led by Ryan Patterson (Coliseum) has released a new 7" -- giving away copies to show attendees in Louisville, KY last night. The EP is titled "Cautious/Crack Up," and shares both a new song and a b-side cover of Big Black, released in tribute to the late Steve Albini.

“Cautious” features members of Modern Life Is War and Shitfire.

Patterson explains:

As happened in the ‘80s, the current post-punk and darkwave climate has become infected with watered-down techno and ineffectual imitations that have nothing to do with the spirit of exploration and breaking of boundaries that inspires me...While I’ve loved delving into the softer side of my songwriting, and I’m sure I will go down that path from time to time, with "Cautious" I felt a strong pull to swing the hammer a bit harder than on any past Fotocrime song.

"Crack Up" also features guest musicians, frequent Albini collaborators Dahm Majuri Cipolla (Mono, Phantom Family Halo) and Jeff Mueller (Rodan, June of 44, Shipping News), as well as Ryan's brother Evan Patterson (Young Widows, Jaye Jayle) on guitar. All proceeds from the sale of the cover will be donated to Albini’s Letters To Santa charity.
