Dark Oz: there's no place like home?
Dark Oz - Fortunately Blank EP

Dark Oz has announced a new EP, out right now as of Nov. 16. The new EP is titled Fortunately Blank and features Frank Meriwether on vocals/guitar, a constant through the band's three EP catalog, plus collaborators Miguel Rivera (now on bass), Nick Linday (guitar), Hic Fiat (drums), and Matt Boney (keys). Lindsay Bones also contributes backing vocals.

The EP was recorded this March in Astoria, OR in an unmarked studio near the location of The Goonies.

"Haunting seems to be a lyrical theme throughout this EP with references to ghosts and demons popping up," the band notes, as the songs explore childhood, a sense of home and, ultimately, seeking connection. The music similarly bridges these concepts, drawing from indie rock, psychedelia, punk, country, and more.

Unsurprisingly given circumstances affecting the Dark Oz project around the time of Piratas' release, namely, the death of drummer Lorien Bourne (a.k.a. Styx) while on tour, Alligators has quite a different sound from that heard … Read more

¡Piratas!
Independent (2015)

I’m not sure I could come up with a worse scenario for a band than having one of its players pass away while the group was touring, but that’s sadly what occurred in September 2014 when Lorein Bourne, a.k.a. Styx and drummer for Portland, Oregon-based and self-proclaimed “garunge” duo Dark Oz, died of complications from Turner Syndrome after a show … Read more

Frank Meriwether (Dark Oz) SPB: What is the weirdest description you’ve heard of your music? Could you see where the commenter was coming from? Frank: I really can't think of any weird descriptions, unfortunately, but the weirdest comparison I got was comparing our music to Genesis. I started listening to … Read more
