Musician Blake Fleming, who has played with Dazzling Killmen, Laddio Bolocko, and The Mars Volta, will release a new solo album on Sept. 17. The record is an improvisational instrumental record titled The Beat Fantastic.
It is currently available digitally, with vinyl due in September.
“I record a bunch of ideas, like making an aural mass of clay, improvising with myself and building layers on intuition, finding different puzzle-piece-rhythms along the way," Fleming explains in a press release. It draws on punk ethos with a jazz approach, of sorts. “To me the best drummers have ferocity and turn-on-a-dime sensitivity. They could rip your face off or snuggle your cat.," he says, adding, “On the one hand it’s allowed for me to create a unique voice on the drums. On the other it’s left me isolated at times: I’m too punk for jazz and too jazz for punk so I said f**k it and started releasing my own records.”
Fleming is also the author of instructional book, The Book of Rhythm.
