American Football has announced two releases in celebration of their debut album's 25th anniversary. The first is a remaster of the self-titled album done by LP1's original mastering engineer, Jonathan Pines.

The intertwined guitars have more sparkle, the drums more bounce and flash, the occasional bass more depth. American Football (25th Anniversary Edition) is the definite version of the beloved album.

The 2xLP 25th Anniversary Remastered release will come in a spot embossed and silver foil gatefold package with a 24-page booklet. You can check out the remastered version of "Never Meant" and pre-order the vinyl release NOW.

The second release is American Football (Covers). The band has gathered an array of artists, such as Iron and Wine, Ethel Cain, Manchester Orchestra, and more to cover the entire album. Both releases will be available on October 18th via Polyvinyl Records. Check out Iron and Wine's version of "Never Meant" below:

American Football are the sort of band that shouldn't have attracted so much attention. When they first properly emerged in 1999, a copy of their eponymous debut in hand, they were still playing small college bars around the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Their album cover was so low-key it should have been unremarkable, depicting the darkened exterior of a … Read more

Much like the recently-reunited Owls, the unfortunately short-lived American Football was a group formed from the remnants of seminal Midwest-based 1990s emo band Cap’n Jazz (whose members went on to form a seemingly endless number of great bands). Unlike Owls who set about making rhythmic post-punk however, American Football’s lineup of Mike Kinsella (guitar, bass, vocals), Steve Lamos (drums, trumpet), … Read more

As a long-time Iron and Wine fan, I was intrigued by the announcement of this double-disc release that spans the spectrum of Sam Beam's musical career. What most call a rarities and b-sides album, I see more of an insight into the progression of Beam's collaborative sound, compiling many of his strongest tracks that never made it onto his full-length … Read more

Alright. Full disclosure: While the moniker Iron & Wine blipped here and there on my radar and your humble narrator thinking that it would not be the worst name for a band anchored in the unsägliche genre that has become known as Neofolk, I had never actually listened to Sam … Read more
