Michigan musician Jay Alan Kay has set a release date for his solo debut, when the artist also known as Jason Kotarski (Singing Lungs) will release Before Work on Setterwind Records. The 13-song record is rooted in punk while taking an Americana bent.

Per a press release:

In his basement, in the early hours of the day before heading to shifts at his day job where he works as a librarian, Jay Alan Kay recorded the songs on a vintage Tascam 238 cassette recorder that allegedly once belonged to Anthony Kedis’ father. Playing all the instruments and often finishing the songwriting as the songs were put to tape led to the feeling of urgency that permeates the album.

Kotarski says the inspiration for this songwriting approach comes from a tip to see Guided By Voices in Dayton, OH. Listen to the lead single online.
