Denver, CO-based upbeat punks SPELLS are celebrating their tenth anniversary as a band this year, and the group has a fitting release to mark the occasion, the new 12" LP Loose Change, Vol. 2, which collects out-of-print songs with previously digital-only material, all on one colorful vinyl.

The record itself, and 10-year milestone, are news on their own, but we also have a teaser track for you, "Deceiver," which fittingly contradicts our description of the band above. Because while SPELLS play genre-fitting punk rock, their songs (and live shows) are full of surprises.

"'Deceiver' is a song about those people, emotions, ideas and/or compulsions we let into our lives despite their obvious and advertised ill intentions," the band tells us. "It’s about the demons we welcome in, red carpet and all. ‘Deceiver’ was the first song in the SPELLS catalog that leaned into a darker sound. It has more of a post-hardcore feel compared to the garage-influenced punk approach that had defined our sound up to that point. ‘Deceiver’ still has a ton of energy with a sing-along-type chorus and we would call upon more of these elements in future songs as we continued to grow and evolve as a band.

Loos Change, Vol. 2 will be sold in North America and Europe on 12” vinyl LP on "Dolphin" crystal clear/solid blue vinyl and "Dracula" transparent red/black vinyl (with download), through multiple labels: Snappy Little Numbers Quality Audio Recordings (USA), Motorcycle Potluck Records (USA), Big Neck Records (USA), Keep It A Secret Records (Germany), and Shield Recordings (The Netherlands).

Calling your record Past Our Prime and then having a song named “Past My Prime” is messing with my head as I write this. But while there is no arguing that SPELLS are a self-aware band, that’s about as much as they’ll really mess with the listener on this record, titled (again), Past Our Prime. Musically speaking, the band play … Read more

If you haven’t seen SPELLS live you’re missing out. It’s a high energy, one-of-a-kind experience -- probably even if you don’t dig the music. Fortunately, I’m into their hook-driven sound that I’ll loosely call pop-structured punk. It gets in your head quickly, but it exactly ain’t crisp and pretty. Sure, the lyrics are often a little light-hearted, but with deeper … Read more

Stimulants & Sedatives
Snappy Little Numbers Quality Audio Recordings/Rad Girlfriend Records (2020)

Spells are party punk, pure and simple. And I’m not talking songs about beer and friendship, a la early Pkew Pkew Pkew or Andrew WK. Spells are the life of the party, not just songs about what goes down when the lights dim low.Stimulants & Sedatives is sort of a concept record – it has two sides on the vinyl … Read more
