What is a Deerhoof Sandwich (EP)?

As we've previously reported -- but it bears repeating as it's a year-long endeavor -- Kill Rocks Stars is releasing an ongoing series of covers from their vast catalog in a series called Stars Kill Rock throughout 2021 as the label celebrates 30 years of releasing records.

Mostly available as a digital subscription, the latest release is a new twist: a 6-song EP of artists Nels Cline (Wilco), Shutups, Dave  Depper (Death Cab for Cutie), and Shaylee, all covering Deerhoof, sandwiched by Deerhoof themselves covering Sleater-Kinney and LiLiPUT. Thus, the EP is titled Deerhoof Sandwich, available now.

Speaking of how and why they chose to cover Sleater-Kinney, Deerhoof says:

KRS has an enormous catalogue. How do you choose? Something about the Sleater-Kinney song though, we had to try it. We wanted to celebrate one of these magic moments when they sounded like they didn't quite know what they were doing...when emotions were revelations, and dissonances collided in some mystery universe between intention and accident. We relate to that part of us that works just like a child. We wanted to take a question mark of a song and not answer it.

See a full track listing below.

While it's not 100% yet, SPB is hoping to post a feature about the label's anniversary later this summer.

  1. Deerhoof “Don’t Talk Like” Sleater-Kinney cover
  2. Nels Cline feat. Yuka & Ches “Jagged Fruit” Deerhoof cover
  3. Shutups “Milk Man” Deerhoof cover
  4. Shaylee feat. Kynwyn Sterling “The Tears and Music of Love” Deerhoof cover
  5. Dave Depper “Twin Killers” Deerhoof cover
