In this case the headline says it all. Built TO Spill have recorded an upcoming record for Ernest Jenning Record Co. titled Built To Spill Plays the Songs of Daniel Johnston, which predictably contains 11 cover songs originally recorded by Johnston.

As pre-record press explains: "The band recorded these songs as a trio (Doug Martsch, Jason Albertini and Steve Gere) in August 2018 during rehearsals for their performances backing Daniel Johnston, though Johnston himself does not perform on the album."

"Basically we wanted to get good documentation of what our rehearsals were like. It was a lot heavier than what I thought it would be," Martsch tells Rolling Stone. While the songs are covers, Built To Spill inevitably puts their own flourishes on the songs throughout.

Listen to "Bloody Heart" now, shared in a bandcamp embed after the bump.

Untethered Moon
Warner Bros. (2015)

Calling Untethered Moon guitar rock is somewhere to start. While the band takes their chops from the 1990s alternative boom, the defining moments of their songs come out of the guitars rather than in vocal styling or rhythmic direction. This record succeeds or fails because of that guitar. (See what I just did there? Now you have to keep reading.)As … Read more
