Offering a new model of raising funds by offering exclusive music, Minneapolis, MN-based venue First Avenue launched the First Love Project this week.

Like many independent venues struggling as the pandemic wreaks havoc on public health as well as local economies, the venue is looking for alternative sources of income to stay afloat for when live music returns. The venue and local fans have teamed up to coordinate a subscription model where artists (local and national) contribute music. All proceeds go directly to the venue.

The first wave of contributors includes Atmosphere, The Hold Steady, Fugazi, Thurston Moore, Har Mar Superstar and a growing list, as more songs will be released over the course of one year.

Mary Beth Mueller, spokesperson for the Committee of Concerned Citizens behind the fundraiser explains:

I got tired of signing ‘Save our Stages’ petitions and decided to do something. Many of us simply cannot imagine this city or the national music landscape without First Avenue. We started emailing bands, and every single one of them responded, ‘yes.’

First Avenue celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2020 and is one of the country’s longest-running independent music venues. Here’s a review of Dillinger Four at First Avenue in late 2020. The venue is also known from the film Purple Rain.

So Many Other Realities Exist Simultaneously
Rhymesayers (2023)

Atmosphere has always felt like rapper Slug pouring his soul into the mic. It feels authentic and refreshing to hear his humble self-reflection. But after a few albums, it also kind of feels like overload. There’s such a thing as too much emotion and strife. That’s not a knock on Atmosphere’s art, but Atmosphere took a break from each other. … Read more

Teeth Dreams
Washington Square (2014)

The Hold Steady has been on quite a ride. They went from “New York bar band” to critical and indie darlings to, now, wavering somewhere on the edge of the public consciousness without really breaking into new circles. In other words, they seem to have found their fan base and stuck with it. Separation Sunday was a favorite record of … Read more

The Family Sign
Rhymesayers (2011)

Atmosphere’s MC, Slug has made a career, literally, out of exploiting and exercising his own personal demons as well as of those around him. He has an uncanny knack for telling a deeply personal story—sometimes his, sometimes someone else’s—all while moving the crowd. In short, he’s the heart-on-his-sleeve guy who rocks the party. Though, as Slug gets older, there’s a … Read more

Whoa-oh is both a pop-punk staple and a songwriting trick that finds its way across many genres. Is it a gimmick to create an easy anthem; a cheap way to fill in syllables; or does it not matter at all because, in the end, the songs that use it have … Read more
