Jesse Michaels and Tim Armstrong of Operation Ivy fame have reunited and enlisted the help of Joey Castillo (Circle Jerks) and Spencer Pollard (Trash Talk) to form BAD OPTIX. The band have released their debut single, "Raid," as the kickoff for Hellcat Records' Hellcat Singles Club. Check it out below:

Michaels comments on the track:

Raid is about every person's spiritual autonomy from the powers that be, regardless of who they are or what their particular struggle is. Like many of the tracks we have worked on, I heard the music and wrote the lyrics very quickly, almost on the spot. This was only the second song we did but it felt hot immediately and just flowed so we thought it would be a good way to introduce the new band to the world.

On reuniting, Michaels says:

Our creative connection seems to be stronger than ever and all the music we loved back then, we still love. As soon as we started writing together, we found that we had the same collaborative energy that we had in the past, so it was natural and fun just to keep going.

Armstrong adds:

It came back, just like that. Like when we were kids. There is a special chemistry between us and I don’t take it for granted.

Epitaph (2023)

Other write-ups I see of Tomorrow Never Comes are basically calling this Rancid V, Part 2. The cover art looks a bit like the back of that album, actually. And while there is some merit to the comparison, I think that description is misleading. This record absolutely shares that style of short, repetitive, and angry punk songs but it has … Read more

Trouble Maker
Hellcat (2017)

It’s strange to me to realize that Rancid just released their ninth album. It’s a mark of age, not to mention that they haven’t been the most productive band on the block since the 3-year spree of LPs 1-3 from 1993-1995. Mostly it just makes me feel old, which is also how their last album, (the disappointing) Honor Is All … Read more

Honor Is All We Know
Epitaph (2014)

For years I was the biggest Rancid fan. The first record I didn’t buy on its release date was B-Sides & C-Sides, and that’s because I already had the songs. I was an unapologetic completest. As the post-2000 records have been coming, I became an apologetic completest. I bought the double album version of Let the Dominoes Fall and spun … Read more
