A new band comprised of Brian Moss (The Ghost, Great Apes, Hanalei), Neil Hennessy (The Lawrence Arms, Joyce Manor), and Paul Lask (The Ghost) shared their new project and debut, self-titled EP, out August 26 on digital platforms.

The vocals/guitar/drums trio began via pandemic demo sharing between Moss and Lask, who had both played in The Ghost, also drawing Hennessy into correspondence. All three now displaced members were active in the Chicago, IL scene in the early '00s, and continue to make music now for varied projects.

The songs were recorded in multiple locations, stitching together an EP of cascading guitars, riffs, atypical time signatures, and fairly straight forward drumming.

Check out a single, "Silent Count."

Hanalei released Black Snow last year.

Strategies EP
Independent (2022)

At only four songs, Strategies’ debut EP is a quick play. The project is led by Paul Lask (The Ghost, Tight Phantomz), who created and sent demos to his longtime contemporaries, Brian Moss (The Ghost, Hanalei, Great Apes), and Neil Hennessy (The Lawrence Arms). The EP is wandering and explorative, building off the thoughtful post-hardcore influenced emo of the aforementioned … Read more

Black Snow
A-F (2021)

It’s been ten years since Hanalei released One Big Night, which is a long time between records for anyone. Hanalei is primarily frontman Brian Moss, who has also played with The Ghost, Wunder Years and other bands with names similar to more popular groups. But Hanalei is by far its own thing. It’s from the punk world, but not of … Read more

The Lawrence Arms

Skeleton Coast
Epitaph (2020)

When a band is releasing its third new record since 2006, you’d expect some inconsistency. The Lawrence Arms seem to be timeless though. With Skeleton Coast they pick right up where they left off Metropole (2014). Take the opening stanza of “Dead Man’s Coat” as an example. Beginning with Chris McCaughan’s soft and wanting melodies, it’s unmistakably The Lawrence Arms. … Read more
