R.I.P. Big Star Bassist Andy Hummel

Just four months after the death of Big Star front man Alex Chilton, the legendary power pop band's original bassist, Andy Hummel, has passed away. Hummel died yesterday, July 19, after fighting cancer for two years, according to a MTV report. He was 59.

Hummel contributed to Big Star's essential first two albums, #1 Record and Radio City, before parting with the group in the mid-70s. The bassist played Radio City's "Way Out West" (which he also wrote) during an Alex Chilton tribute show at this year's SXSW. Big Star drummer Jody Stephens is the lone surviving original member of the band.
