Jeff (Too Many Voices-bass)

SPB: What type of bass do you play and how did you get it?

Jeff: I own a few basses. I have an acoustic bass guitar I fiddle around with at home (bought that in 2004 at a music store in Denver), a Fender Musicmaster bass (which is a short-scale bass and that one actually does have an interesting story behind it -- back in the '90s I had a job delivering auto parts for a few months and I stopped at a 7-11 to get a drink. As I was heading back to my car I found an unused scratch-off lotto ticket on the ground. No one was around, so I picked it up, scratched it off and won $500 -- I went to a used music store immediately after work and bought it), and just recently bought a fretless bass from the bassist in my other band for $60 (SX Vintage Series).

But for Too Many Voices, the only bass I've ever used is my Fender Jazz (Marcus Miller model). I bought it around 2003 out of necessity. My primary instrument has always been the bass and I had used a Fender Precision from my high school years through the late '90s. For a time, I wasn't in a band playing bass, and during that time, my P-bass got stolen out of the rehearsal space one of my band's was using. I didn't need to replace it right away, but in 2003, I joined the Hudson Falcons and needed a bass. First thought was to get another P-bass, but I decided to give a J-bass a shot and I never looked back. I kind of wish there was a more exciting story behind it – like, I don't know, Mike Watt gave it to me as a gift....but unfortunately -- how I acquired it is mundane. It's taken me on a lot of adventures these past 18 years though!
