Sea Urchin
Sea Urchin

Matt Strickland (Sea Urchin – multi-instrumentalist)

SPB: Are you familiar with The Tick cartoon, because your cover art reminds me of Sewer Urchin? (Any related deeper thoughts…)

Oh, I am definitely familiar with The Tick, and I wholly believe that mid-‘90s children's programming molded the sense of humor which is present in a lot of Sea Urchin's music. Shows like Space Ghost Coast to Coast, Ren and Stimpy, Action League Now, and The Tick had an absurdist comedy with much more surrealism and darkness than I could get from the disney films my parents would offer me. I didn't have cable so all of these shows would be seen at friend’s houses or on VHS when I could get them to tape them for me which only added to the forbidden fruit of it all. I was not thinking about the Sewer Urchin when we came up with the Sea Urchin art, but I'm sure it was there subconsciously. Adam Finchler, our drummer, came up with The Stooges pun title of our album Sea Urchin... Destroy! so our plan was to always have a Kaiju creature on it, The Tick must have just gotten into the slipstream.
