Eli Hansen (Real Numbers)

SPB: What type of guitar are you playing with Real Numbers and how did you choose it?

Hansen: I play a 1965 Hagstrom I. Many years ago I was guitar shopping in Milwaukee with my Dad (also a musician and guitar collector) and stumbled across one at Rockhaus Guitars. It was so cool and unusual and it played so effortlessly that it pretty much inspired me to start my own band, which I did shortly after buying it. The Hagstrom has been the guitar I've used in Real Numbers ever since, except for our first recording session, where I used an ‘80s Rickenbaker which belonged to the producer.
I also have a ‘60s Kalamazoo from Faust Music (also Milwaukee) that I've used at a show or two and was the rhythm guitar featured on the "Tear It In Two" single.
---
"Tear It In Two" from 2011 (Floridas Dying Records 7in, later compiled on "What Was & What Is") featuring the Hagstrom I on lead and the Kalamazoo on rhythm, both played by me.

The Hagstrom still in use 10 years later on "Brighter Then", 2021 (Slumberland/Meritorio Records). Shimmering lead is a Rickenbaker played by Ian Nygaard.

Brighter Then EP
Slumberland Records (2021)

Last year took a toll on many, many people. It was rough. It was angry. It was painful. And most art reflected that.Sometimes it’s necessary to take a deep breath, relax, and think about that feeling when the sun shines through the clouds. And that’s what Real Numbers sound like to me. The clean and pristine guitar tones really define … Read more

Wordless Wonder
Slumberland Records (2016)

There are a lot of traps in music journalism. Some, like genre, are the same traps that artists fall into. Because of the constrained vocabulary of describing sounds it can be a challenge to speak of a difference between influence, mimicry, and hybrids. So often when a modern band is described as in tune with an early sound, it’s nostalgic … Read more
