One Armed Joey

Avery Okamura (One Armed Joey - singer/guitarist)

SPB: Is there a particular musician who inspired you to start playing your instrument?

Okamura: To be totally honest, I saw School of Rock and thought Jack Black was super cool, not picking up on the fact that in the movie he’s supposed to be like, a total loser…

But shortly thereafter, I became obsessed with Green Day. They were the first band that felt like “my” band, AKA not a band my dad showed me. Their songs were the first ones I went out of my way to learn on my own. I bought the TAB books, religiously listened to the music, learned how to palm mute and write my own songs. Green Day will always both consciously and subconsciously influence every song that I write in some way, and that is certainly not a bad thing!*
