Jiffy (Night Court)

SPB: What was the first show you saw after lockdowns (any emotional takeaways)?

Jiffy: I’m actually pretty sure the first show I went to after the lockdowns was our first show so I’m gonna go all oral history here as it was definitely a memorable one for other reasons as well.

First, I have to hand it to Dried Out for setting it up. I believe one of them works at a backline rental place so they were able to get a P.A. and a gas generator for cheap or free. They are friends of Emilor and I assume through her social media posts had become aware of us and invited us to open for them and Chain Whip. I was already friends with and a fan of Chain Whip and the plan was to do the show outside at Leeside, as indoor events still weren’t really a thing yet, so just seemed like no brainer awesome first show opportunity. As a longtime member of the skateboard community and someone who was starved for live music, Leeside seemed like the perfect venue since people could still follow Covid protocols, but also it’s covered so we could potentially set up under cover if need be since, even in August, there’s always a chance of rain in Vancouver! And of course for anyone not from Vancouver, Leeside is a D.I.Y. skatepark under a bridge in East Van, basically our version of Burnside, not as big but similarly as hardcore/gnar.

I didn’t realize until we got there that they hadn’t really gotten anyone’s permission to do it but between the hardcore skateboarders and punks it was sorted pretty quickly and amicably, so things went pretty smoothly from then on until some drunk idiot decided it would be cool to start smashing chairs in and around the all ages crowd!? At this point everyone there more or less completely turned on the guy in unison and told him it was time for him to go.

So long story short: do it yourself but don’t be an asshole is alive and well in Vancouver!

You’ve heard the black box joke, right? The plane crash joke? People say “if the black box is so strong why don’t they build the whole plane out of that?” It’s nonsensical, extrapolatory logic -- unless, of course, you’re Night Court. The Vancouver based lo-fi punk trio has taken a … Read more

$hit Machine
Recess (2024)

Forget all the stereotypes about punk. Night Court are a punk band, but they aren’t nihilistic or aggressive. Instead, they’re scrappy and DIY and -- while they are certainly cynical at times -- they carry an air of positivity. It’s a well-defined sound on the band’s fourth LP, with 17 bouncy songs to singalong to. “Human Torch” is a fitting … Read more

Debt Offensive, Snappy Little Numbers (2023)

What’s the difference between overabundance and starvation? Between drowning and dehydration? Between far too much and not enough? What’s the difference, then, between everyone else and Night Court? A lo-fi punk trio out of Vancouver, Night Court released their third album, Humans!, June 9th on Snappy Little Numbers and Debt Offensive Records. While their sound may have slightly changed since … Read more

Nervous Birds! Too
Debt Offensive, Snappy Little Numbers Quality Audio Recordings (2022)

Night Court may have a silly name, but the band feels sincere and (mostly) serious. Rooted in garage-punk, the sounds are familiar in form but each track on this 12-song record gives a different energy. Generally speaking, it’s melodic and positive punk with a lo-fi DIY vibe. There are elements of the old Plan-It-X sound but with a little more … Read more

Steven Fairweather (Gob) SPB: How many people mispronounce your name as an Arrested Development reference? Fairweather: HAHA! Not too many actually! I’m sure it’s maybe more of an issue when Googling the band. But we were once out on a run of shows with a band called “Seaway,” so for … Read more
