Brian Gorsegner (Night Birds)

SPB: Would you license your music for film, sports, or ads if given the opportunity? Are there exceptions to the rule?

Gorsegner: I would, and we have. Of course there are many exceptions. MTV used our song "Prognosis: Negative" for the intro credits to a new show they were doing with Will Ferrell as a surfing monkey or some garbage. They did not have our permission to do so, although they thought they did. The whole intro sequence was animated and done around our song when we found out about it, and we pulled the plug on it because we thought it was a sucky deal. If people are going to picture a surfing monkey every time they hear one of our songs we better at least be getting paid well for it!

Night Birds (Fest 11)

Interviews / Fest 11 • December 2, 2012

Night Birds made a name for themselves quickly. Sure, the guys have played in some well-known bands beforehand, but with only one proper full-length to their name (2011’s The Other Side of Darkness) and a foot-tall stack of 7-inches, the band has been quite active. In prep for Fest 11, … Read more

Roll Credits
Fat Wreck Chords (2018)

Roll Credits is an 8-song “mini-album” homage to the classics. Night Birds--the now veteran band of 10 years--says it was made thinking of short-play classics like Negative Approach’s Tied Down and Minor Threat’s Out of Step. Short, fast, loud. It’s a good starting point for their approach, but first, more about the release. In addition to being a 12” EP, Fat … Read more

Mutiny at Muscle Beach
Fat Wreck Chords (2015)

It’s getting tough to find new things to say about Night Birds. They’re as great as ever with third LP Mutiny at Muscle Beach, it’s just that the sound hasn’t changed all that dramatically from day one. Album #3 is supposed to be when they go all avant on us.Their career has filled out nicely, with textural differences and a … Read more

Born To Die In Suburbia
Grave Mistake (2013)

Releasing the 7” teaser Maimed for the Masses certainly helped introduce the increasingly prominent surf guitar in Night Birds. Still, the opener “Escape from New York” is a holy shit moment as it perfectly blends surf lines with punk aggression. After their debut, The Other Side of Darkness, I was wondering just how far the band could take their sound … Read more

Scott O’Brien (Hooch, Smut Peddlers) SPB: How is the approach to your solo work different than with Smut Peddlers? O'Brien: My solo work, which has actually turned into a new collaborative band called Hooch, was a way to work on music I wrote that was somewhat stylistically different from Smut … Read more

Storm Boy What is your favorite 1990s artist? God there’s so much to draw from in so many different scene: much of which we consciously incorporate into our creative process -- like Fugazi, Jesus Lizard, the Cure, and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, but also bands that influenced us simply by … Read more
