Set for release on Friday April 19, NC35: Volume 2 follows last year's BC35 release, which archived notable works recorded at producer Martin Bisi's Bisi Studio in New York, NY. Volume 2 features live performances of songs by current/former members of Sonic Youth, Swans, Blind Idiot God, Alice Donut, Lubricated Goat, Cop Shoot Cop, and more, who have worked with Bisi in the studio, which is now threatened by rezoning proposals in the city.

Speaking to the uncertain future of the studio, establishing in the 1980s, Bisi tells Brooklyn Vegan: "The City estimates 18,000 new residents, 8,200 new units. Their premise goes beyond the need for affordable housing, it’s based on the expectation of tens of thousands of jobs coming to NYC, and those people needing housing...So the net shift will be grossly unaffordable. In carving out space for the arts in Gowanus, the rezoning encourages my building to expand, potentially up to 17 stories, to accommodate about 1,000 artists. My space was established at a time when I could utilize a large space, and I do, and depend on it. My fear is that I’m in the way of all this – that I could be sacrificed in the interest of a higher number of incoming artists, likely fairly affluent – and the character of the arts themselves gentrifying."

Live Skull, under the moniker New Old Skull, has shared a recording from Volume 2 here. A record release show will be held on April 25 at Market Hotel in Brooklyn, featuring Live Skull, White Hills, and other BC35 contributors:

Martin Bisi  SPB: There are all kinds of anniversary album/compilations out there. How did you choose this approach to celebration the milestone? Martin: I didn't really see the milestone coming. Maybe it's because the date of that first Eno recording is an odd year - 1981. It wasn't until I … Read more
