Posted by Jon E. on Wednesday 1st September, 2010We\'ve been sent the unfortunate news that there will be no Harvest of Hope Fest in 2011. Here\'s an excerpt from the statement from the festival\'s organizers:
"Sadly, we are announcing that the 2011 Harvest of Hope Fest in St. Augustine, Florida has been officially canceled. Organizing the 2009 and 2010 Fests were enormous undertakings and at this time the Harvest of Hope Foundation and St. Johns County do not have the resources and time to put together a 2011 Fest.
On the positive side, as a result of the 2009 and 2010 Fests, the Foundation and other promoters have organized and continue to organize smaller musical benefits to raise needed funds for migrant farmworkers and their families. To all of you, our deep appreciation for sticking by the Harvest of Hope Foundation, attending our events, dedicating your musical craftmanship and talent, and staying true to those who harvest and produce our food.
Thank you for recognizing that Migrant Farmworkers earn our support!"
The festival, which was held near St. Augustine, FL in 2009 and 2010, was organized to raise funds and awareness for migrant farmworkers via the Harvest of Hope Foundation.

Posted by Jon E. on Monday 26th July, 2010This year\'s Sound and Fury Festival in Santa Barbara, California apparently ended in a bit of chaos yesterday as day three of the festival was shut down following a small riot.
What really happened isn\'t exactly clear, but according to Santa Barbara Sheriff\'s Department, a "large fight" erupted at roughly 6:20pm. Strangely, it seems that the ruckus was partially precipated by someone riding a motorcycle into the pit area of the Earl Warren Showgrounds during a set by New York hardcore band Backtrack.

Officers ultimately shut the show down, preventing a handful of bands from taking the stage. Among those that did not get to perform were Earth Crisis, Bane, Bracewar, Foundation, and Defeater.
Several hundred festival attendees did eventually make their way to an impromptu house show in Oxnard, where Foundation, Bracewar, and others played. Unfortunately, that show was shut down by the Ventura County Sheriff\'s Department after neighbors reported noise and loitering. The host was later arrested for violating a noise ordinance.
Posted by Jon E. on Thursday 22nd July, 2010As some of you have noticed, Red Scare has combined its annual Red Oktoberfest label showcase with the recently announced Riot Fest 2010. Label czar Tobias Jeg explained:
First of all, this year we will be combining Red Oktoberfest with Chicago\'s Riot Fest. If ya can\'t beat \'em, join \'em, right? Here\'s what\'s up. First of all, the Riot Fest guys extended a very awesome and gracious invitation and those guys know how to run shit. All the people there and all the volunteers have been nothing short of super cool towards any of my friends and any of the bands I work with, so I\'m honored to be able to work with them this year. The other thing is that I am getting married at the same time that all this crap is going down. And of course, I can\'t just get married like a normal person. No, we decided to do something that is apparently unlawful. Not for some deep "corollary of love" bullshit, or some wild nonsense I came across in "I Wrote Her Name Upon The Strand". No, nothing like that. We\'re just doing it cuz we\'re stupid, so be sure to come visit us in jail.
To that end, the label has confirmed the following bands for their stage/showcase: Propagandhi, Cobra Skulls, The Copyrights, The Brokedowns, Vultures United and Brendan Kelly.
Toby also addressed the obvious question:
Did you say Propagandhi? They\'re not on Red Scare!" I know they\'re not on Red Scare, they\'re smarter than that! I\'ll tell you this much though: Propagandhi are in my opinion the most vital punk band of my generation and their music and words are what motivated me to do good things within underground music and start Red Scare. I can\'t think of a more perfect band to headline a Red Scare showcase and I ain\'t just sayin\' that because they agreed to play it (after a month of serious begging).

Posted by Jon E. on Thursday 1st July, 2010The otherwise well-recieved Insubordination Fest became the source of conflict between attendees of the 12-hour festival and club owners who were apparently trying to sell high-priced bottles of water while denying any other sources. While venue owner Dan McIntosh said bartenders were "encouraged" to sell water, no one was supposed to be denied tap water if requested.
That account differs from the view of most attendees who said they were denied water. Jacob Bruce, named in the report said this:
A manager had instructed all the bartenders not to hand out free water. I asked him what I was supposed to do and he said he could sell me a bottle for three dollars. said "three dollars!?" and he suggested that I buy a bottle and refill it in the bathroom, which I did all night right up until the of the show. The only time that I couldn\'t was when the men\'s room was closed because all the toilets were backing up.
Fest co-founder Mark Enoch was quite upset with the problems and is looking for alternative locations for next year. He added:
It was hellish. I don\'t think I\'ll ever get some of the customers back because of the venue, and I don\'t blame them.
Other people weighed in on comments noting:
The owner is lying. I was there. At first they had jugs of water out on the bars as they have in previous years but they were removed. The club tried to jack up beer prices and it backfired on them. ($5 for a can of Boh or PBR was the cheapest option). When bar sales fell flat the club doubled down by locking everybody in and removing the free water. I asked for a glass of tap water and was denied. Several of my friends had the same experience. I was told I had to buy a bottle of water. Eventually the bartender relented and gave me a glass of ice, but would not fill it with water.
